This week we are answering some of the top SEO questions we come across. In this one we answer how to get my business on google maps.
There are two main stages to this and thanks to google name changes and feature changes it can be a little confusing about where to add your business and what you are adding it to – here is how it works. Google maps is the map services that helps you get directions too and from places. Within that service is also Google places. These are places on maps that are of interest, so businesses, petrol stations, theme parks, restaurants and so on this is where you want to add your business to and this is how to get your business on google maps.
What you need to do is go to www.google.com/placesforbusiness and either log in if you have a google account, or create a new one. From there you can add your business details if a listing doesn’t already exist. You should fill out as much of this profile as possible, so add opening hours, business details, phone numbers, pictures and so on.Most importantly you will want to add your areas of operation either as individual locations or a radius around your business address.
You will then need to verify your listing. You can verify by mobile phone with a code they text you, or via phone where it will be read out to you, or by postcard which will arrive in the post (generally about 2 weeks later). Your listing won’t be live and visible to the public until your complete this step.
Sometimes you will see your business on the map already as Google tends to pull data from other services like yell and qype. If you see your business you will want to click on “claim this listing” and then follow the previous steps.
At Gareth Goddard SEO we can offer further optimisation of your profile to ensure it comes up at the top of searches with local queries. Have a look at our Google Places Optimisation Service page for more information.
